To Count Calories Or Not To Count

Counting calories while on ketogenic diet is very individual. It truly depends on how your body works and adapts to this diet. Number one rule of keto is balancing the macros at less than 5% carbohydrates, about 15% proteins, and 80% or more fats.

HOWEVER… there are times when counting calories is less or more necessary.

DONT WATCH CALORIES IF: 1. you are trying to get into ketosis (eat fat fat fat!) or 2. if you are maintaining your desired weight

WATCH CALORIES IF: 1. you are trying to gain weight (mass) 2. you are trying to reduce weight (use a keto calculator to detemine your calorie needs – my favorite one is on Maria Emmerich and can be easily googled) 3. if you have tendency to either over or under eat.

Do Ketone Urine Sticks Work?

Frequent question if if the ketone unine strips work. The answer is not as simple as yes or no. Its both.

What they tell you is whether your urine contains ketone bodies – that is all. It may happen for various reasons. 1. your body is keto adapting and releases ketones it is not yet using. 2. for whatever reason your body is not using up all keones and releases them with urine 3. you are kicked out of ketosis and your bosy is releasing ketons it cannot use at the moment. What it basically means is that they are not currently used and the excess is being excerted via urine as ‘waste’.

You will releasing a lot more ketones during the adaptation period than once you are adapted (and using ketos to their full potential). It is a great tool in the begining of your keto journey, but later on – not so much.

Once keto-adapted, it is best to invest in the blood ketones meter for most accurate reads.

Dandelion – Overlooked Force Of Nature

You see this plant’s flower everywhere and many times treat it like a weed. Some have used its flower in a homeopatic remedies for years due to its many medicinal properties.  My family has been making a syrop out of it for years. It tastes like honey! I used it a lot prior converting to keto and I rarely get sick if at all. But very few people know about the power of its roots.

How can it help you? Well, it stimulates the production of enzymes (bile) so it is very beneficial for anyone who has digestive problems. Moreover, it detoxifies the liver, helps those prone to allergies, and lowers bad choresterol. Dandelion root is rich in iron, calcium, folic acid, magnesiuma and vitamins A&C.

It may come as a surprise, but scientists from the University of Windsor in Canada have recently discovered that Dandelion Root works better at fighting cancer than chemotherapy. While chemotherapy kills all cells alike – healthy and cancer affected. The dandelion root only attacks the cancer cells. Pamela Ovadje, who is the dandelion tea researcher, has been recognized for her anto cancer work. “The result of her was “eye-opening”  and it opened the door for more studies looking at different cell lines “to see that dandelion root extract does induce a selective form of programmed cell death in cancer cells in a very distinct manner.”

You can buy dandelion root tea at most health foos stores or online. But if you were to source it yourself, then try finding this plant far from major roads so it is protected from the modern world enviromental impurities.

Starving Cancer

We always have been advised to eat low fat, if we are to live long in health and “prosperity”. However, more and more doctors and scientists are changing their minds  when it comes to fats. It is becoming more obvious that we need choresterol more than we came to think.

We have recently learnt that choresterol plays an important role in the funtioning of brain’s neurological system. Lack of fats in today’s diets demonstrates itself in increased number of polupaltion suffering from Alzheimer disease. This is just one of the examples. Another one reason we should eat a good amount of fats is our bodies’ need of cholesterol to make sure our skin is naturally producing vitamin D3 from its exposure to UVB rays. What seems to be the biggest breakthrough, though, is recent studies that ketogenic diet can treat and even cure the most aggressive cancers.

Here, I want to mention Dr.Dominic D’Augustino who noticed that implementing High fat and low carb diet in mice, drastically helped with the effectiveness of chemotherapy and caused cancer to shrink.

The key to success is to limit carbs as much as possible, so no sugars, starches, etc. and increasing the consumption of good fats such as: eggs, avocado, olive oil, hem oil, butter or coconut oils, etc.

why does it happen you ask. Well, cancer cells need sugars in order to grow. Furthermore, they lack oxygen that healthy cells use to metablize the energy from ketones. Inability to do so cause cancer cells to starve! Lack of sugars in your body may just be the best cure for cancer!

So why are so many oncologist not talking about it? Or still recommending low fat diets? And they do recommend them – how do I know? Because it is written on my mom’s hospital discharge documents. Well, the reason may be simple. FOLLOW THE MONEY! If patients resorted to alternative treatment methods, the medical field would start loosing lots of money that comes from expensive treatments including widely used chemotherapy.

When I found out my mom has cancer, the first thing I did was eliminate all sugars from her diet. My reasearch showed that it is best to keep the carbs under 12g of carbohydrates during the therapy. I recently noticed she needs less pain meds. Whether it is the keto liufestyle or introdusing many superfoods that are supposedly helpful in fighting cancer, it makes me happy to see her suffer less.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Through the ages, apple cider vinegar has been used in a wide variety of ways that expanded beyond its culinary function.  It has been used in beauty remedies, as well as, to treat various health issues. Its benefits have not only been passed on to us (by the word of mouth) from one generation to another, but recently they have been scientifically proven. So what is it good for? What are its benefits? Let me list few below and you decide if you need a bit more ACV in your life.

Although it has no probiotics,  apples contain pectin and pectin promotes healthy digestion as it encourages the growth of good bacteria. Pectin is a carbohydrate that slows down nutrient absorption by attaching itself to items in your digestive tract that your body can’t use such as cholesterol, harmful bacteria and even toxins.

ACV is, also, used to treat and disinfect some fungal  and bacterial infections including foot and nail fungus or ear infections. Hypocrates, father of the epidemology, was said to use the ACV to disintect wounds. Another great use of ACV is to prolong the life of food. Did you know it blocks the growth of E.coli?

When it comes to the ketogenic diet, ACV is just as beneficial here. It is said to lower the blood glucose levels and it is often used by people suffering from diabeties. Dr. Jason Fung recommends adding this vinegar to foods higher in carbs to eliminate their blood sugar spiking effect. It is said that drinking 2 tablespoons of ACV before sleep, results in 4% decrease of blood sugar by the time you wake up.  In addition, many say that adding ACV to your diet helps with weight loss. Awesome huh? If you consider its blood sugar level  decrease qualities – it just makes sense!

Another reason why apple cider vinegar is such an important addition to any diet is its cancer fighting abilities. Although it is still being studied, many sources report that is has ability to kill cancer cells and or reduce its growth.

I say “drinking a spoon or 2 of the  ACV a day, may help keep doctors away.” Buttoms up!

Notes: I, personally, drink 2 TBSP before sleep and 1 upon waking up on an empty stomach. I use a straw and brush my teeth immidiately after use – vinegars can be abrasive to enamel.
